They may be the broker, but...

They are also closely affiliated with/own some of the companies they subcontract to. I am having a very similar experience in dealing with this company and the company they subcontracted my move through - East Coast Van Lines. The experience I went through is too lengthy for this rebuttal. Just know that picking this company to do business with is a BAD idea. What they tell you up front is not anywhere close to how it will be in the end... and guess what? ...they don’t care - AT ALLLLLL.

Not A Moving Company - They Are A Broker

This company is a broker - they have no moving trucks.  Their job is to find you a mover, and that's it.

A broker's responsibility is to find you a mover, and once that happens, the broker has no further responsibility.  Whatever you were quoted by the broker - means nothing.  The real price of the move is the guy who shows up at your door to move you, and if that's 2X more than what you were quoted, then that's the price of the move.  You should look at your contract and figure out who your mover is, give them a call, pay what you need to pay, and you will get your stuff back.  Technically, based on what you wrote, your stuff isn't being held hostage; you simply haven't paid the full amount.

Moving is not inexpensive; it is labor intensive, and there is no automation.  The internet is the wrong place to find a mover; a better place would be in your local Yellow Pages.  Have a mover come out and quote you a price; if you cannot afford that price, then you should rent a truck and perhaps hire some movers who can help you load everything.  Maybe it's more work than what you wanted to do, but the price is cheaper and you are in control of your goods from start to finish.  Best of luck to you.
