I have aCompaq Presario laptop that I have had 4 years and suddenly it won't power up. I just learned there is some type of issue with the motherboard on these laptops causing overheating and it's not a cheap fix. I also heard this is a known problem with this laptop that Compaq has know about yet haas never sent me any recall letters. I can't afford a new motherboard at this time or a new computer for that matter. I am very frustrated and don't know where to turn for answers. I use this computer everyday for work and we are in tough ecomonic times. I cannot just go out and buy a new computer. What can I do?? Who do I call? Please help?

NVidia GPU Failure

Call Compaq and find out if your GPU is still covered under the recall from Nvidia.  Several thousand laptops have a faulty GPU which overheats and disconnects from the board.  If you call around to computer shops, some places do repair them for under 100 dollars, but Compaq may offer you a motherboard free of charge.

There really isnt much you can do at this point. Its either fix it or get a new computer. 4 years is a long time for a laptop to function anymore. You are well outside the expected and warrantied lifespan of that computer. Its not defective if it took 4 years for the problem to manifest, thats why there's no recall. Most computer manufacturers warranty their computers for 1 year, so any breakdowns over a year is normal.

No ripoff here unfortunately, just an old computer.
