i purchased a vcr from circuit city. it made a hissing, sizzling noise even when turned off. i had an extended service policy and took it in for repair. after waiting 12 days with no call from them, i called and found it was ready. took it home...still making noise. took it back again and told them i wanted my $ back..they said no, they get to try to fix it twice before replacing it. i asked for a loaner...they said no, you only get a loaner if they cant fix it in 7 days..i told them theyve already had it for 12 days and couldnt fix it. so ill be out of a vcr for another 12+ days. the clerk seemed to take exceptional glee in my dissatisfaction. i went over to the vcr section of the store, and asked the salesman about the esp plan. i asked him if i would get a loaner if i needed service..." Oh yes sir! if anything goes wrong and you have to bring it in, youll get a loaner!" i then said..ok give me a loaner and showed him the service ticket........" ohh uhhh errrr, youll have to talk to the lady in returns" i said id already talked to her, and she wont give me one......" ohh ahhhhh errrr i dont know" CIRCUIT CITY IS A RIPOFF!

You should be able to go back to "Circuit City" within 30 days of purchase and get an "in store credit" and buy another VCR. I would suggets not the same brand.

This is a good "before you buy" tip. Go to your local library and ask the reference librarian for the latest copy of "Consumer Reports Magazine" and then go to the back pages and find the index, then look up TV's, VCR's,etc.

Once you've found what your looking for ask the librarian for that particular back issue and see what Consumer Reports says what is the "best bang for your buck".

I own a TV/VCR shop for the last seven years and
these are just a few tips that I suggests to my customers. Remember NOT to buy on price alone. A very common mistake that people make.
