Complaint Review: Auto Owners Insurance

Auto Owners Insurance Big Insurance Rip Off to Small Business Lansing Michigan

I operate a small business and my general liability insurance went from $826.00 per year to $5000.00 per year. I told my agent I would not pay it and would obtain my insurance elsewhere and instead of cancelling my insurance, they turned me over to a collection agency. I had already obtained general liability insurance with another company and Auto Owners is trying to make me pay for insurance that they didn't provide because my agent didn't cancel my policy like I told him to. I figured it would cancel when I didn't pay the bill but apparently not. If you don't pay the bill they turn you over to a collection agency and then it makes you look bad on your credit report. I have perfect credit and now because of Auto Owner's incompetence I have been put through a lot of trouble. I would suggest that anybody be very careful when dealing with them.

To the person defending Auto-Owners, you're lying!

His claim is valid.  Auto-Owners simply can ignore the agent (and say the policy is in force, pay it) to which they have been known to do.  If you work for Auto-Owners let them know this, we're not taking it anymore.  People who have been wrong by Auto-Owners are speaking up!

This happened to someone i know too.  They canceled the policy, Auto-Owners sends it off to a MI collection firm.  These guys are crooks.  Thank God you didn't have a claim to file, they delay delay delay and deny coverage on things that should be covered!  Don't trust these guys, they take money in almost anyway possible from what I have gathered so far.

Misdirected?

I can say without a doubt that Auto-Owners uses only independent agents.  Therefore, if your agent messed up, it was not done by Auto-Owners or any of it's employees.  It sucks that your agent didn't cancel your policy when you asked him/her to, but that is a criticism that would be better directed at the agency you used.  Auto-Owners had no way of knowing that you intended to cancel your policy, so of course they are going to want to collect money for the time they insured you.

In the future please note that you will get a notification of cancellation whenever a policy is canceled.
